Calorie Mate, a strangely named cookie

Japanese tend to think English is always cool!  We don’t care so much about what an English word exactly means or even misspelling.

This product’s name may sound scary for native English speakers who are on a diet.  It is a long-seller in Japan.  ‘Calorie Mate’ is cookie bars containing a proper amount of vitamines, proteins, minerals and carbohydrate.  It is for people who are too busy to eat decent food.  It has some flavors like chocolate, cheese, fruits and maple syrup.  They all taste good.

Jack Bauer by Kiefer Sutherland used to be featured in its TV commercials.  He was eating the cookies during the missions.  The advertisements were funny and I loved them.

It may be helpful during your tight schedule in Japan and make a small good memento of your vacation to make your friends laugh.

  1. I love that it’s called a “food block.” From now on I’m calling all bar-form food this. 🙂

Thanks for your comment. Do you have a similar food to this in your place?

      • Kind of. We have energy bars and protein bars that people usually eat if they’re exercising a lot, but they look more like granola bars. Yours looks like a shortbread cookie, so I’m assuming it’s also more delicious.

Oh, I see. Certainly, they look like a shortbread cookie.
