The first auction of the year was held at Tsukiji fish market yesterday.

A 269 kirogram bluefin tuna caught off Oma port (a very famous port for its great tuna) went for 56.49 million yen to set a new record.  A Japanese sushi restaurant chain ‘Sushi Zanmai’ was the highest bidder.  Soon after the auction the Tsukiji-based restaurant started to offer the very expensive tuna at the same prices as usual!  They can’t make a profit at all unless they serve for more than 15000 yen per one dish.  However, they offer each piece of nigiri-sushi of Ootoro, chutoro, and akami at 418 yen, 313yen, 134 yen respectively.
