Zizo Boddhisattva3 ‘salt zizo’

This is the zizo statue of Ekoin temple in Ryogoku.  It’s called ‘salt zizo’

Why is this statue called like that?  Because there is a traditional custom that people offer salt to this deity when their wishes are fullfiled.  Sometimes so much offering of salt was made that it looked like a deep snow.

By the way, Zizo Boddhisattva is also believed to come all the way to hell in order to save you from there and guide to the heaven.  Compared with other Buddhist statues, Zizo often look simple and poor.  But he is a very kind and powerful deity.  That’s why I like him all the more.
